Anger Management Therapy in Nashville

Starting Here

Maybe your anger comes on fast and hits harder than you mean it to. Maybe you're more irritable than you used to be, and it's starting to cost you at home or at work.

Anger is often a signal, not just a problem to suppress. Anger management therapy helps you understand what's underneath it and respond differently.

This Can Look Like

Struggles with anger can look like:

  • Outbursts that feel disproportionate to what triggered them
  • Chronic irritability or a short fuse, even over small things
  • Saying or doing things in anger that you regret afterward
  • Physical tension—clenched jaw, tight chest, racing heart—before an outburst
  • Relationships strained by conflict or fear of your reactions
  • Suppressing anger until it builds up and comes out all at once

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy addresses both the anger itself and what's driving it. We'll help you:

  • Recognize your early warning signs before anger escalates
  • Understand what emotions—often hurt, fear, or overwhelm—are underneath the anger
  • Build tools to pause and respond instead of react
  • Repair relationships affected by past anger or outbursts
  • Express frustration and boundaries without it turning into an explosion

Our Approach

We treat anger as information, not just a behavior to control. Your therapist will help you understand its function and triggers while building concrete tools to change the pattern, without shame about needing the support.

Therapeutic Approaches We May Use

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — identifying anger triggers and thought patterns
  • Somatic Experiencing — releasing tension and dysregulation held in the body
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — understanding the protective role anger often plays
  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy — building the pause between trigger and reaction

Who Might Benefit From Treatment

Anger management therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Have outbursts that feel bigger than the situation calls for
  • Notice anger affecting your relationships, work, or parenting
  • Feel regret or shame after losing your temper
  • Suppress anger until it builds up and eventually erupts
  • Want tools to express frustration without it controlling you

What to Expect in Therapy

Your first session explores your anger patterns—what triggers it, how it shows up physically, and what it's costing you in relationships or work.

Your therapist will help you build practical tools for the moment anger rises, alongside a deeper look at what's underneath it.

Sessions are available in person at our Midtown Nashville office or online for clients throughout Tennessee.

FAQ

Is anger management therapy only for people who've had legal or workplace consequences?

No. Many people start anger management therapy proactively, before things escalate to that point, simply because they want better tools and healthier relationships.

Will therapy tell me to just suppress my anger?

No. Suppressing anger often makes it worse over time. The goal is to understand and express it in ways that don't damage your relationships or wellbeing.

Do you accept insurance?

Nashville Counseling Associates is out-of-network with insurance providers, so we don't bill insurance directly. Many clients use out-of-network benefits to get reimbursed, and we're happy to provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) for you to submit.

Session fees generally range from $130–$185 depending on the clinician, with $85 sessions available with our graduate-level interns and sliding-scale options based on financial need.
