Starting Here
Some trauma isn't a single event—it's a pattern that repeated over years, often in childhood or in relationships where you couldn't easily leave. It shapes how you see yourself, how safe relationships feel, and how you move through the world.
Complex trauma therapy is different from processing a single incident. It's about untangling patterns that were, at one point, the way you survived.
This Can Look Like
Complex trauma can look like:
- Chronic difficulty trusting others, even people who've shown up for you
- A shaky or shifting sense of identity
- Intense emotional reactions that feel bigger than the moment calls for
- A harsh inner critic shaped by years of criticism or neglect
- Difficulty feeling safe in your own body, even when nothing is wrong right now
- Patterns of choosing relationships that echo the original harm
How Therapy Can Help
Complex trauma therapy moves slowly and builds safety before it builds insight. We'll help you:
- Build a foundation of safety and stability before processing deeper material
- Understand how early or repeated experiences shaped your patterns today
- Reconnect with parts of yourself that had to stay hidden or small
- Regulate a nervous system that's been on alert for a long time
- Build relationships based on trust, rather than the patterns you learned to survive
Our Approach
Complex trauma requires more than symptom relief—it requires rebuilding a felt sense of safety, often from the ground up. Your therapist will move at a pace that respects how much your system has had to protect itself, prioritizing stabilization before deeper trauma processing.
Therapeutic Approaches We May Use
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) — working with the parts of you shaped by repeated harm
- EMDR or Brainspotting — processing trauma once safety and stability are established
- Somatic Experiencing — regulating a nervous system that's been in survival mode
- Psychodynamic Therapy — understanding long-standing relational patterns
Who Might Benefit From Treatment
Complex trauma therapy may be a good fit if you:
- Experienced chronic or repeated harm, especially in childhood
- Struggle with identity, trust, or emotional regulation in lasting ways
- Have tried therapy before but felt like it moved too fast or too surface-level
- Notice trauma responses woven into most of your relationships
- Are ready for deeper work at a pace that respects your nervous system
What to Expect in Therapy
Your first sessions focus on safety and stabilization—building coping tools and a trusting relationship with your therapist before diving into deeper material.
Complex trauma work often unfolds over a longer period than single-incident trauma, moving carefully between processing the past and building skills for the present.
Sessions are available in person at our Midtown Nashville office or online for clients throughout Tennessee.
FAQ
How is this different from your Trauma Therapy or PTSD pages?
Complex trauma usually refers to repeated or chronic harm, often relational and often beginning early in life, that shapes identity and patterns over time. If you're processing a specific event, our
or
pages may describe your experience more closely—though many people find their experience fits somewhere in between, and that's okay.
Why does this kind of therapy take longer?
Because complex trauma affects identity and nervous system regulation over a long period, building lasting safety and trust typically takes more time than processing a single incident. Your therapist will pace the work with you, not on a fixed timeline.
Do you accept insurance?
Nashville Counseling Associates is out-of-network with insurance providers, so we don't bill insurance directly. Many clients use out-of-network benefits to get reimbursed, and we're happy to provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) for you to submit.
Session fees generally range from $130–$185 depending on the clinician, with $85 sessions available with our graduate-level interns and sliding-scale options based on financial need.
